The Hellmouth, a location on the Moon, is a huge underground fortress. Cored deep inside the Moon's underground, the Hellmouth was built and is inhabited by the Hive.[1][2][3]
About
Little is known about the interior of the Hellmouth. Because it is a Hive fortress, its interior is a large, dark, cavernous space featuring a huge chain running down the center, which is used to imprison the Hellmouth's "most fearsome denizens".[1] Guardians can explore the Hellmouth, but it is unknown what missions take place there.
Design and Inspiration
The Hellmouth was one of the first locations revealed to the public, with concept art and a brief mention appearing at the Reveal Press Conference and in the Reveal Trailer.[3] At Bungie's GDC 2013 Panel, Joe Staten stated that the Hellmouth contains a hidden fortress below the surface where a "dark army dreams of conquest and corruption".
Bungie Lead Environment Artist Sam Jones described the Hellmouth as having "one function only – to ask of the player what lies within."[1] Because Hive architecture generally is meant to have an "accentuated sense of scale, menace, and a hefty touch of the exotic without being too alien", the Hellmouth "takes these principles and expands them to a colossal scale."[1] Early concept art for the Hellmouth was intended to convey "appropriate themes for the Hive, including: mystery, darkness, evil, strength and militarism."[1]
Trivia
- The concept art of the Hellmouth that appears in this article was the very first art asset created for the Moon, and was used as the starting point for all subsequent assets.[1]
