The Guardians compose a standing army of specialized soldiers tasked with the defense of the last city on Earth. They are also responsible for exploring the remnants of human society abandoned throughout the solar system, what remains of their Golden Age of exploration. Guardians wage a vicious armed conflict against a myriad of extraterrestrial species who pose an immediate threat to the survival of humanity. The greatest source of the Guardian's power lies in their ability to harness the energy of The Traveler and use it as a weapon against their opponents.
Guardians are divided into several classes which include:
A fourth possible class, Vanguard, was briefly mentioned in one news article following the Reveal Press Conference. At Bungie's GDC 2013 Panel, however, Joe Staten stated several times that there are "three main classes," lending doubt to this possibility. Though it is possible that Vanguard may be a possible Focus, implied to be a form of subclass.
Guardians are speculated to align themselves with Factions, though the nature and mechanics of how factions figure into gameplay are not yet known.
Some Guardians have been shown using a Ghost, a small, flying bot with artificial intelligence that can assist the Guardian in tactical situations.
Trivia
- The Guardians were originally thought to be called "Knights" in an early leak. Some have speculated that the name was changed to avoid confusion with Knights of the Old Republic.
